BREAKING NEWS: At least one dead and 13 people injured after a car ploughs into pedestrians in New York’s Times Square

A speeding vehicle has struck at least 20 pedestrians on a sidewalk in New York City’s Times Square, killing one person and seriously injuring another.

The New York Police Department closed off the area after the collisions occurred on on Thursday, just before noon, at the corner of 45th Street and Broadway.

At least 19 people people were injured after the collision at the Midtown Manhattan tourist site, NBC New York reported. Four people are either critical or seriously injured.

The driver, identified by NBC as Richard Rohas, 26, of the Bronx, has been taken into custody. He reportedly already had two DWIs to his name.

Police were filmed taking a man into custody shortly after the deadly collision. He has been identified as Richard Rohas, 26, from the Bronx

The driver reportedly has a history of driving under the influence

He was said to be 'visually impaired' when he was arrested

Rohas allegedly attempted to flee police after the crash, before being grabbed and bundled into a cop car by several police.

Police said that he got into a fistfight with an officer as they attempted to arrest him. That officer was not badly hurt.

Roahs has a history of drunk-driving incidents and he was ‘visually impaired’ according to officers on the scene, NBC reported.

He has two DWIs to his name from earlier arrests, ABC reported.

In one of those two incidents he drove at 99mph in a 50mph zone. He has also had his license suspended multiple times.

It’s not known whether the incident was intentional, but NBC reported that police are leaning towards it being an accident.

Police have all but ruled out terrorism, they said.
