The main attraction was in the captial city, where as many of 110,000 revellers lined the streets of London to watch 12,000 fireworks explode above the River Thames.

The London event used to attract as many as 500,000 people, but former London mayor Boris Johnson decided to make the event ticketted to reduce the number of people amid heightening terror threats – a policy which incumbent mayor Sadiq Khan has continued

Safety measures such as concrete barriers to prevent a Berlin or Nice-style attack were placed on the streets and extra police were out in force to protect revellers from any potential terror attacks.
